Ranking without Links

“Location, Location, Locat… I mean, Content, Content, Content!”

When we start off by asking “how can I rank higher on Google?” we’re already making a big mistake. Asking that question is approaching the problem from the wrong angle. It’s kind of like watching a dog chase his own tail-- he’s probably never going to catch it, and he’ll spend all his time literally running around in circles.

That’s generally what happens when we spend all day thinking about “HOW to rank higher on Google.” We’ll run around in circles unlikely to reach our goal.

Instead of “how?” ask yourself “why?”

“Why should Google rank my site above so and so…?”

“Why does this article deserve to be in the 1st position of a search result?”

If I can’t come up with a good answer, that means that I need to write a better article, or provide a better answer than my competitor has provided. I have a feeling that most people are still spending their time trying to build backlinks for underperforming content.

The purpose of this exercise is to highlight that it is CONTENT, CONTENT, CONTENT… that is important. Remember the old adage that “location, location, location” is important for real estate? The same goes for “content, content, content” as it applies to your digital real estate, your website.

By asking myself “why” questions. I force myself to give Google a good reason to rank us higher.

The average consumer doesn’t care about how many backlinks you have. Therefore, you really shouldn’t either.

The average consumer just wants his or her question answered, now!

If you can answer someone’s question thoroughly. The backlinks and rankings will come naturally.

It reminds me of a quote from A Field of Dreams:

“If you build it (awesome content), they will come (links and rankings).”

We at LA Local SEO fully drink Google’s juice: we adopt a content-first SEO marketing model. Our efforts are built around generating awesome content and promoting it.

Here’s a really great article by Rand Fishkin from Moz regarding The Death of Link Building and the Rebirth of Link Earning.

So if you keep a company blog, focus on answering your customer’s most pressing questions, and your rankings will follow.
